Santa Rosa is the largest city in Sonoma County and is the county seat. It is about 46 miles from San Francisco.

Luther Burbank once called this area "the chosen spot of all the earth as far as nature is concerned" and that is still true today. Set amid beautiful valleys and rolling hills, Santa Rosa is 30 minutes from the Russian River with its steelhead salmon fishing, boating and swimming and just 30 minutes from Lake Sonoma Dam, also with boating and fishing. Travel 40 minutes west and you'll find the beachside community of Bodega Bay, and you are also just minutes from the famous Sonoma County wineries and resorts.

It is hard to accept that with all of this recreation around that one must think about work but, alas, many residents must, and there is plenty of employment in Santa Rosa. Major employers include Hewlett-Packard and Optical Coating.

Schools in Santa Rosa are excellent and score very high in standardized testing-many in the 90s. The University of San Francisco recently opened a satellite campus in downtown Santa Rosa and there is easy access to the highly rated Santa Rosa Junior College. Sonoma State University is just 20 minutes away.

There is an excellent choice of housing in Santa Rosa, from suburban tract homes to retirement homes to elegant estates.
